چکیده

Torrefaction kinetics of Norwegian biomass fuels, including spruce (softwood) and birch (hardwood) was studied using a thermogravimetric analyser. Small samples of approximately 10 mg and particle size of 63−125 μm were heated at a constant heating rate of 5 °C/min and kept afterwards for 4 hours in isothermal conditions at different temperatures (230, 240, 250, 260, 270 and 280 °C). A two-step kinetic model was employed to simulate the recorded mass loss curves. The results showed that the decomposition of the initial biomass in the first step, to form an intermediate solid and volatiles, exhibited a higher conversion rate compared with the second step. The rate constants (in s) for two steps are: = 21.2 × exp . , = 4.74 × 10 exp . for spruce and = 106.6 × exp . , = 2.80 × 10 exp . for birch. Moreover, the final solid yield, which decreased gradually with increasing torrefaction temperature, reproduced the experimental results well.

An assessment of the torrefaction of North American pine and life cycle greenhouse gas emissions

Bioenergy is increasingly being used to meet EU objectives for renewable energy generation and reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Problems with using biomass however include high moisture contents, lower calorific value and poor grindability when compared to fossil fuels. Torrefaction is a pre-treatment process that aims to address these issues. In this paper four torrefaction treatments ...

Torrefaction of Biomass Pellets: Modeling of the Process in a Fixed Bed Reactor

Torrefaction of biomass pellets is considered as a useful pretreatment technology in order to convert them into a high quality solid biofuel that is more suitable for pyrolysis, gasification, combustion, and co-firing applications. In the course of torrefaction, the temperature varies across the pellet, and therefore chemical reactions proceed unevenly within the pellet. However, the uniformity...

Torrefaction Kinetics of Red Oak (Quercus rubra) in a Fluidized Reactor

Different kinetic models have been proposed to characterize torrefaction of biomass, demonstrating dependencies on the raw material, experimental system, reaction time, and temperature. Conventionally, stationary processes have been used for kinetics studies of the torrefaction process. In this research, the torrefaction of red oak (Quercus rubra) in a bench-scale fluidized reactor was studied ...

Torrefaction and low temperature carbonization of oil palm fiber and Eucalyptus in nitrogen and air atmospheres.

Torrefaction is a pretreatment method for upgrading biomass as solid fuels. To provide flexible operations for effectively upgrading biomass at lower costs, the aim of this study was to investigate the properties of oil palm fiber and eucalyptus pretreated in nitrogen and air atmospheres at temperatures of 250-350°C for 1h. Based on energy and solid yield and introducing an energy-mass co-benef...

Impact of torrefaction on the grindability and fuel characteristics of forest biomass.

Thermal pretreatment or torrefaction of biomass under anoxic condition can produce an energy dense and consistent quality solid biomass fuel for combustion and co-firing applications. This paper investigates the fuel characteristics and grindability of pine chips and logging residues torrefied at temperatures ranging from 225 °C to 300 °C and 30 min residence time. Grinding performance of torre...
